How many solar panels do I need to power my house?
One of the most common questions is how many solar panels does it take to power a house? The answer is different for every home. To get a rough idea of how many solar panels power a house, consider the following:
- Your household energy consumption: The more energy your house uses, the more solar panels you will need. Think about how often you run the air conditioner when it gets hot, or how often you use the washing machine and dryer for laundry. Other contributing factors include your type of light bulbs, having energy-efficient appliances and being diligent about turning the light off when leaving the room. - Where you live: Another variable is the amount of sun exposure that your area receives over time. This is based on climate and weather, and is calculated in squared kWh/meters per day.

How is electricity produced from the sun?
This is done through solar panels composed of photovoltaic (PV) or solar cells that are installed on your roof. When the sun hits a cell, the photons are converted to electrons of direct current (DC) electricity that flow through an inverter where they are then transformed into an alternating current (AC) power. Electricity produced from solar panels is then used to power your home or business.
Solar energy produced is tracked through a net energy meter. Any unused electricity from production simultaneously goes back into the electrical grid. At night or on cloudy days – when your solar power system is not producing more than what’s needed –electricity is drawn from the grid as it normally would. In most cases, solar panels produce more than enough energy.
In order to maximize your investment and produce as much solar energy as possible, the panels need direct access to the sun’s rays for most of the day. Any shading on a solar power system will reduce its energy output considerably.
How much energy does a solar panel system produce?
The amount of electricity a solar panel produces is not only proportional to the sun’s intensity, but also depends on three factors: solar cell efficiency, solar panel size and the amount of sunlight directly hitting the panel. Each solar panel should have a number listed on the back identifying how much power will be made during peak conditions, also known as a max power rating. All solar panels are rated by the DC power produced in standard test conditions. A typical solar panel produces about 270 watts of electricity based on the efficiency and size of what’s installed. For example, if you have 20 panels installed, you may have an output of about 5.4 kilowatts (kW).
Do solar panels work at night?
Solar panels installed on your roof work best during daylight hours. When the sun is shining directly onto them, sunlight can be converted into electricity. Your solar panel efficiency drops at night because there is no sunlight to convert to electricity and solar panels can’t generate power in darkness. However, your solar panels generate so much power during a sunny day that any excess power you don’t use immediately is conserved and put into the utility grid. The surplus power generated by your solar panels offsets the energy you use at night.
At night, you are using power from the utility grid, just as you normally would have before you installed solar panels. It’s possible that you won’t have to pay out of pocket for it. The national utility company, CFE, through a Mexican net metering law, purchases your solar power energy generated during the day at your current rates to offset what you use from the utility at night.
How efficient are solar panels?

These numbers are delivered in real-time with full transparency, so you can see exactly how much energy you are using when you turn on the TV, for example. The production and consumption numbers are weighed against each other. On days where your system produces more solar power than your home needs, you will add power to the utility grid.
Your efficient solar panels will continue to generate power whether you are home or not. You don’t have to “turn on” or “turn off” your solar panels depending on when you are in your home. It’s not like the kitchen light or the TV, which needs to be turned off to save electricity and money on the utility bill. Solar panels are highly efficient and are always working, generating power during hours of sunlight and during cloudy weather.
What is the lifespan of a solar panel?
A solar panel typically lasts at least 30 years with many systems still operating for over 40 years in the market. During that time, most solar power systems require maintenance on the inverters and general maintenance cleaning the solar panels periodically. In general, the life of solar panels depends on the quality of the solar panel technology used, including the photovoltaics (PV), and the quality of the overall installation.
Annually, solar panels lose close to half a percent in overall performance. After 25 years of operation, high-quality solar panels will still be operating around 87.5% efficiency. What components are in a solar power system?
There are six components of a solar power system, as shown through this solar panel diagram that will harness the sun’s energy and make it your own:
- Solar Panels: When properly installed, solar panels directly convert the sun’s rays into direct current (DC) electricity. These panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells and are placed on a home’s roof in direct sunlight for optimal use.
- Inverter: When the sunlight hits a solar cell, its photons are converted into electrons of DC electricity that flow through an inverter where they are converted into an alternating current (AC) power. This is the electricity that powers your home.
- Electrical Panel: Once sent from the inverter, the AC power is sent to an electrical panel, also commonly known as a breaker box.
- Utility Meter: Also known as a net energy meter, a utility meter helps consumers keep track of how much solar power is produced throughout the day. When you generate more power than you can use, the meter actually works in reverse and sends that power to the utility grid, thus offsetting the energy you use at night.
- Utility Grid: Your household or business will still be connected to the utility grid because it will need to draw power from it at night. However, the cost of using the grid’s electricity is offset by the amount of energy you put into it during the day.
- Monitoring system: the monitoring system continuously tracks your solar power system kWh production and home usage to compare to your utility bills. This system is transparent where you have access to the monitoring system information through your computer or mobile device. It ensures your entire system is running correctly. If a problem occurs, the system will automatically notify us.
What are solar modules?
Solar modules are the heart of solar power systems. These panels come in three types: monocrystalline, polycrystalline and thin film. Monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon are the two most commonly used styles of panels due to high performance and quantity of electrical output.

What are solar inverters?
Solar power inverters are a part of solar electrical systems that help convert the sun’s energy into usable power. The solar panels on homes and businesses are made up of small groups of semiconductors that react to sunlight by freeing electrons. But while those free electrons can travel through an electrical circuit, they can’t be used to power most appliances until they have passed through solar inverters. The photovoltaic (PV) cells in solar electrical systems convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter converts that DC voltage into the alternating current (AC) electricity that people can use to meet some or all of their energy needs.
The reason solar inverters are necessary is because DC and AC power work differently. In DC power systems, an electrical current only flows in one direction. In AC power systems, the current moves in both directions. While some things that require electricity can use either AC or DC power, the power grid in the US uses AC power. Therefore, almost everything we use every day runs on AC power, directly or through a converter.
What are the different types of solar inverters?
Solar systems are clean, safe and reliable because photovoltaic panels are able to harness the sun’s renewable energy without using moving parts or generating emissions. Inverters for solar panels make it possible to harness power from sunlight by transforming the electricity collected by PV panels into useable AC voltage.
There are three main classes of solar inverters, each used in different types of solar energy systems. Stand-alone solar power inverters are used in isolated systems that power appliances or homes directly. Synchronous solar panel inverters, also referred to as grid-tie inverters, create a link between a home system and the utility grid, where excess energy can be sold back to the utility company. Multifunction inverters, where excess energy can be stored in a battery, can do both.
